Three Great Books on Russian History

Based in Parsippany, New Jersey, Ian Winograd is an associate attorney and senior document review analyst for Pressler, Felt and Warshaw LLP, where he has worked since 2017. Ian Winograd is also interested in studying legal theory and reading American and Russian history.

An expansive country in both historical significance and geography, Russia has many stories to tell. Here are some of the best books to read to get a stronger understanding of this northern nation.

Bloodlands
Written by a Yale professor of history, Bloodlands tells the story of the Eastern European countries that were usurped by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany as Hitler and Stalin fought for control over the Baltic and Black Seas. This is a fascinating look at the history of Russian-occupied Eastern Europe.

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
A modern classic by Alexander Solzhenistyn, a famous Russian dissident and former Gulag prisoner, this is a fictional look at life in the prison labor camps of the Soviet Union. This is an important book that helps us better understand the human costs of Stalin’s Russia.

The Russians
Written by Hedrick Smith and published in 1976, this book serves as a time capsule looking at Russian life in the 1970s. Smith, a New York Times Reporter, lived in the Soviet Union with his family and recorded his observations of everyday life, including rural and industrial life, religion, political dissent, and party leadership.
